Expert 2025 Volvo XC90 review

Our expert's take

volvo xc90 2025 exterior oem 08 jpg

The Volvo XC90 is closing in on a decade old, but the Scandinavian SUV is finally getting a face-lift for 2025 that keeps it looking fresh and modern. There’s a new hood and minimalist front end with less brightwork, thinner headlights and a wider grille featuring a sleek crosshatch design. The result is dramatic, visually widening the three-row people hauler despite the unchanged platform.

Updated Infotainment Tech

Inside, the XC90’s dash is redesigned with bolder horizontal design elements and a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen featuring Volvo’s latest infotainment software. The system features sharper resolution, new features and apps, and over-the-air software updates. Like the displays in Volvo’s current electric offerings — and many competitors’ displays — the screen now reserves space to keep commonly used functions visible and just a poke away even when deep in other menus and apps. Volvo plans to update the software on existing vehicles over the air during 2025 to bring this updated functionality to some 2.5 million vehicles globally.

Below the new dash, Volvo also redesigned the XC90’s center console, increasing storage space and repositioning the wireless phone charger for easier use. Additional insulation throughout the cabin should reduce wind and road noise.

Mechanical Tweaks, Too

A revised suspension featuring standard adaptive dampers will also increase cabin serenity, and buyers looking for further refinement can opt for the available air suspension. Capable of adjusting ride height by as much as 2.4 inches, the air suspension can optimize the vehicle’s stance for aerodynamic efficiency or rough-road clearance.

Volvo is otherwise mum on mechanical details of the 2025 XC90, but we expect the full powertrain portfolio — turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid, turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid, and a plug-in version of the latter — to carry over. Volvo has ambitious plans for electrification, and per its data, nearly half of the miles its plug-ins drive globally are on electric power.
