Expert 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan review

our expert's take

What Is the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan?

The Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact SUV that competes against the likes of the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4. One of the things that sets the Tiguan apart from these rivals is that it offers an available third row of seating, pushing seating capacity from five to seven, but that third row is very cramped. Under the Tiguan’s hood is a 184-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder that’s coupled to a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available, but choosing AWD nixes the available third row.

What’s New on the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Volkswagen gave the Tiguan a thorough freshening for the 2022 model year and hasn’t changed it significantly since. For 2024, the base S trim comes standard with VW’s IQ.Drive driver-assist system (essentially adaptive cruise control with lane departure steering assist), as well as features like automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers and wireless smartphone charging.

What Features in the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Are Most Important?

Standard features include:

  • 6.5-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 8-inch digital instrument display
  • Two USB-C ports
  • Keyless entry
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure steering assist
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Adaptive cruise control

Available features include:

  • 8-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument display
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Hands-free power liftgate
  • Rear USB-C port
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Fender-brand stereo system

Should I Buy the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan?

The Tiguan is certainly worthy of a test drive. It has the understated refinement you expect from a German automaker, but be sure to carefully check out the touch-sensitive controls on upper trims; we’ve found them to be finicky. The turbo four-cylinder engine provides only modest straight-line speed, but it’s good on gas and smooth in operation. The available third-row seating is intriguing, but only if you need those extra seats occasionally, and only for kids. With the third row occupied, cargo space is in very short supply.

I got interested in this car when I rented it for a couple of days while conducting business out of town. I discovered that it suited my auto needs 100 percent, and at such a reasonable price. I am of a certain age and I find it more of a challenge to get in and out of cars. I don't like climbing up into and sliding down out of trucks and SUV. I don't like bending the slipping into sedans and having to pull myself out of them. The Tiguan comes closest to walking into the driver's sit and walking out. As for stowage, the stowage in the rear also is at perfect mid-thigh level, minimizing bending and lifting. So comfort was of highest priority. But economy comes in a close second, and so far the MPG is great. So is the pickup; it's plenty peppy.

This is my se mod Tiguan first being a 2020 se 4 motion. The current Tiguan a 24 se 4 motion r-line black. The steering controls are complete garbage. Thought I could get used to it but nope. The seats are the same as my 2020 but for some reason this material doesn’t breath. All me and my passengers do it sweat on our back sides. The engine power is still terribly weak. My other Tiguan was as well but a call to a certain performance shop fixed that issue which the current Tiguan is still plagued with. The list of reasons to avoid this vehicle is long. And wish I had driven longer to maybe see before purchase. Well hind sight is 20/20. Will be trading off as soon as I can find another vehicle I want with the zero percent. Oh the first 2500 miles was a road trip for Florida and back. Only good thing was the gas mileage something I could care less about with all the other “ nope “ factors this vehicle has.
