2016 Volkswagen Tiguan review: Our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The five-seat Tiguan is Volkswagen’s answer to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 compact SUVs. It’s powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is available with front- or all-wheel drive. A performance-oriented R-Line version is offered.
New for 2016
Tiguan trim levels now have more features. The base S model gains keyless access with push-button start, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, automatic headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The SE trim level adds 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with LED daytime running lights and a panoramic moonroof. SEL versions now have 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a memory function for the driver’s seat and power-folding side mirrors.

A newly available multimedia system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring on the Tiguan’s dashboard screen.

Not Reliable, expensive to own

Nothing but problem after problem, worst car I have ever had for reliability, It is a shame because it looks nice, but that's about all it is, a pretty face, always something wrong with it and getting parts is a nightmare. DO NOT GET ONE

Unreliable

I have done all of the recommended maintenance, regular oil changes, etc. However, this car started to fall apart. Should have listened to everyone who said VWs are pieces of $&*@. Not to mention the parts are expensive. Never buying a VW again.

Best car I’ve ever owned

Best car I’ve ever owned. I bought it used with 10k miles for $17.5k in 2018. I’ve drove for Lyft for 2 years and recently drove it from California to South Carolina. It’s has never broke down, had to replace the tires a few times but nothing but basic maintenance. I’m at 112k miles and going strong. One small accident the other 2 cars were totaled mine had minor damage on the front driver side. I love my VW.
