2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan?

Previously known as the Scion iA, then the Toyota Yaris iA, Toyota’s subcompact car is now the Yaris Sedan. Based on the Mazda2 (which is no longer sold in the U.S.), the five-seat Yaris Sedan is powered by a 106-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that works with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Competitors include the Nissan Versa, Kia Rio and Chevrolet Sonic.

What’s New on the 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan?

A new top-of-the-line XLE trim includes simulated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The car’s gaping front grille now has a honeycomb-style insert, and there’s a new rear lip spoiler on LE and XLE trims.

What Features in the 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan Are Most Important?

The Yaris proves that efficiency, fun and value can all happily coexist. With EPA-estimated gas mileage of up to 35 mpg combined with the automatic transmission, and a suspension built by Mazda, the Yaris is an efficient, nimble performer. Don’t expect quick acceleration from the 1.5-liter four-cylinder, however.

Should I Buy the 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan?

There’s a lot to like about the 2019 Yaris Sedan, especially with its rare blend of efficiency, value and driving dynamics. The lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity – two relatively common features nowadays – is annoying, and it doesn’t have as many active safety features as other Toyotas, but it’s a good little car.

Cute Little Car

I probably would have never considered a Yaris until I test drove it. I had a Corolla and needed a cheaper car. The Yaris is wonderful and drives just as smooth as the Corolla. It’s smaller but it’s just me in the car so it’s perfect.
