2024 Nissan Altima review: Our expert's take

By Jared Gall

Fresh off a minor facelift for 2023, the Nissan Altima rolls into 2024 with no significant changes. The facelift brought a fresh grille design and an infusion of available tech to bring the car up to date, but for 2024, the biggest change is a longer trial period for the available NissanConnect Services, an app that allows for remote start and stop and door locking and unlocking through a connected phone. Buyers of all but the base S trim level also now get three years of complimentary access instead of 2023’s six-month trial.

Safety Comes Standard

Standard on every 2024 Altima, Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking. Nissan’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous highway driving feature, which combines steering assist with adaptive cruise control and works at stop-and-go-traffic speeds, is available on upper trim levels.

Powertrain and Trim Levels

Two engines are again available in the Altima. Most trims have a 188-horsepower, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, while Nissan’s unique variable-compression-ratio turbocharged 2.0-liter makes 248 hp in the top-of-the-line SR VC-Turbo variant. Both are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available on all but the base trim and the SR VC-Turbo for $1,500.

The S rides on 16-inch steel wheels, while the SV gets 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and the SR and SL ride on 19s. The S carries the bare-bones approach inside, where you’ll find manually adjustable cloth seats, a six-speaker audio system and a single USB port.

Upgrading to the SV means the driver gets a power-adjustable seat. The SV also nets an 8-inch touchscreen with satellite radio and four USB ports (two up front, two in back), as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. ProPilot Assist is optional on the SV.

A sort of light-duty sports sedan, the SR gets a sport-tuned suspension, a unique dark-chrome grille, black mirror housings and body-color door handles. Combination leather-and-cloth upholstery is unique to this trim. If SR drivers want more comfort and tech on the highway, though, they’ll have to add the available Premium Package or spring for the SR VC-Turbo.

In addition to ProPilot Assist, standard equipment on the SL includes a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, full leather seating — power-adjustable and heated for both front occupants — a nine-speaker Bose sound system and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, navigation and NissanConnect Services. A 360-degree camera system is also standard on the SL.

Pricing

The Altima is very much the same as it was, but so is the price. Full pricing (including a $1,095 destination charge) is as follows:

  • S: $26,825
  • SV: $27,625
  • SR: $29,025
  • SL: $33,525
  • SR VC-Turbo: $36,525

Versus the Competition

The mid-size sedan class is holding strong in the face of the crossover onslaught, and the Altima faces stiff competition from the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry in particular. Its base price is competitive, but that bare-bones Altima S lacks a lot of equipment the others include even in their most basic trims.
