2023 MINI Countryman review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2023 Mini Countryman?

Mini’s largest vehicles, the Countryman and its SE Countryman plug-in hybrid variant are five-seat subcompact SUVs. Base Countryman trims use a 134-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, while S trims get a 189-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A performance-focused John Cooper Works version is powered by a 301-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The SE’s PHEV powertrain makes 221 hp combined and earns an EPA-estimated 73 mpg-e with 17 miles of electric-only range. Base and S trims are available with front- or all-wheel drive; other versions are AWD only. Countryman competitors include the Mazda CX-30, Fiat 500X and Volkswagen Taos.

Should I Buy the Mini Countryman?

In a world full of cookie-cutter designs, the spunky styling of Mini vehicles stands out, and the Countryman delivers these signature retro looks with a bit more space and utility. It’s also fun to drive and very customizable, with an array of options and accessories — but those options can get expensive fast.
