Jeep Grand Cherokee

Most significant changes: The most significant change for 2024 is what isn’t changing: Pricing holds mostly steady for the 2024 model year after the big price increases the Grand Cherokee line got for 2023.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee line carries over virtually unchanged for the 2024 model year aside from some new wheels for a few trim levels. The 2023 model’s 30th Anniversary Edition package also becomes the Anniversary Edition (it’s now the nameplate’s 31st year, after all).

Beginning with the three-row Grand Cherokee L for 2021, Jeep has steadily expanded its mid-size SUV into a line of vehicles. It updated the traditional two-row Grand Cherokee with a redesign for the 2022 model year and added a 4xe plug-in hybrid version later in 2022. Cars.com gave the redesigned Grand Cherokee the Best SUV of 2023 award and has been evaluating ownership of one in our long-term test fleet.

2024 Trim Levels

The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee L trim levels include the Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland and Summit, along with X upgrades for the Laredo and Altitude trims and a top-level Reserve version of the Summit.

The trim lineup for the 4xe PHEV continues to have the only Trailhawk variant, which according to Jeep is the most off-road-capable Grand Cherokee. The Trailhawk also has a CARB State Edition version that is sold only in California and other states that follow its California Air Resources Board emissions rules. Beyond the Trailhawk, other 4xe trim levels are the base, Overland and Summit (which also has a top-level Reserve version).

Powertrain Specs, MPG and Range

The Grand Cherokee’s three powertrains carry over for the 2024 model year. Standard for most gasoline Grand Cherokees is a 293-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 that puts out 260 pounds-feet of torque. Optional for Overland and Summit versions of the three-row Grand Cherokee L is a 357-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that produces 390 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to eight-speed automatic transmissions. The V-6 is available with rear- or four-wheel drive; the V-8 is 4WD-only. Jeep offers three 4WD systems with escalating off-road capability. Additionally, the six-cylinder is rated to tow up to 6,200 pounds, while V-8 models are rated for up to 7,200 pounds.

The two-row 4xe’s plug-in hybrid powertrain uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It comes standard with an eight-speed automatic and AWD with a two-speed transfer case. Combined output for the PHEV is 375 hp and 470 pounds-feet of torque, and it’s rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

The gasoline six-cylinder is EPA-rated for 22 mpg combined with RWD or 4WD in the Grand Cherokee and 21 mpg combined with RWD or 4WD in the Grand Cherokee L. The 2024 EPA ratings for the V-8 engine and the 4xe have not yet been posted, but the 2023 combined rating for the V-8 with 4WD in the Grand Cherokee L is 17 mpg. The 2023 4xe with 4WD is rated 56 mpg-equivalent combined for hybrid driving and 23 mpg in gasoline driving. The EPA-rated battery electric-only range for the 2023 4xe is 26 miles.

Tech Features and Options

There are no significant tech features that are new for 2024. Standard tech features include USB-A and USB-C ports, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, Jeep parent Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 multimedia system with an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen (depending on model and trim level), and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster display.

Depending on model and trim level, buyers can add the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with navigation, a 10-inch color head-up display, satellite radio and wireless charging. Also available is a 10.25-inch front-passenger display that offers navigation, camera viewing and video entertainment capability with an HDMI port, and an available rear-seat entertainment system includes dual 10.1-inch touchscreens, an HDMI port and Amazon Fire TV built in. Premium audio options include a nine-speaker Alpine system and a 19-speaker McIntosh system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features and Options

There are no significant safety and driver-assistance features that are new for 2024. A robust suite of safety and driver-assistance features is standard on all Grand Cherokees and includes full-speed collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian and bicyclist detection, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane departure steering assist, a blind spot monitor and rear parking assist sensors with braking.

Optional features, depending on trim level, include a night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection, a driver attention alert, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera system, a video rearview mirror and Active Driving Assist, which is a hands-on Level 2 assistance system for highways that maintains a set distance from traffic ahead and actively centers the vehicle in its lane. The Grand Cherokee can also be had with Intersection Collision Assist, which provides audible and visual alerts if it detects a potential collision with other vehicles, and Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, which recognizes open parking spaces and steers the vehicle into a parking space while it directs you to shift, brake and accelerate.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet posted ratings for the SUV’s 2024 models, but the 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L both earned the highest Top Safety Pick Plus awards. The Grand Cherokees earned top scores in the crashworthiness tests and for their headlights, plus advanced or superior ratings for the standard crash-prevention systems. Note that the IIHS awards apply only to Grand Cherokees built after March 2023 and Grand Cherokee Ls built after May 2023 following fuel tank and headlight modifications Jeep made to fix issues in earlier testing.

Pricing for 2024

All versions of the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee are on sale now at starting prices that are mostly unchanged from the 2023 model year, though inventories currently are limited for the most popular versions. The prices for 2024 models by trim level are listed below (including $1,795 destination) with the change from 2023 in parentheses. Laredo, Altitude and Limited trims add 4WD for $2,000; Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve, and 4xe variants are 4WD only. Note also that paint colors other than white add $595 to the price, also unchanged from 2023.

Which Should You Buy?

The 2024 Grand Cherokees offer a newer model year of the same vehicle for the same money in most cases, so why not? Buyers may also want to consider the 2023 model instead if they want the features of the Overland or Summit trims but with RWD. However, as this is written, Jeep is offering significant sales incentives on many 2023 models, depending on region; that’s worth checking out while they last.
