Jeep Cherokee

Similar in size to the original, the second-generation Jeep Cherokee took on a more futuristic, if controversial, look compared with the boxy, utilitarian first-generation model, while retaining better off-road capability than many small SUVs. Powertrain choices included a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or 3.2-liter V-6, along with a new 270-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine introduced as part of a 2019 update that also included more conventional styling. All engines were paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that wasn’t particularly refined. Several four-wheel-drive systems were available. Virtues included a quiet interior, Stellantis’ excellent Uconnect multimedia system, and decent towing capacity of up to 4,500 pounds. Jeep retired the Cherokee after the 2023 model year, leaving the shorter Compass as the brand’s sole entry in the mainstream compact SUV class.

The Jeep Cherokee’s XJ generation that debuted in 1984 continued for 1997, gaining a host of updates that included revised front and rear styling, new body-style cladding and a steel liftgate in place of the previous fiberglass unit. An all-new interior was highlighted by a fresh, modern dashboard design. Powertrain updates and other revisions followed in subsequent model years, but by 2001, the basic Cherokee platform was almost old enough to vote. Jeep elected to retire the Cherokee name after the 2001 model year; a new Jeep compact SUV named the Liberty essentially took the place of the Cherokee in Jeep’s model lineup. The Liberty lasted through the 2012 model year, as Jeep revived the Cherokee name on an all-new compact SUV for 2014.

The Jeep Cherokee dates back to 1984, when it was introduced as the first modern compact SUV. With available four-wheel drive and unibody construction for carlike handling, the first Cherokee set the stage for a generation of family-friendly SUVs to come. Jeep saw little reason to tinker with its winning formula, so the first-generation Cherokee changed little over the course of its run. Two- and four-door versions were offered, along with four- and six-cylinder powertrains, manual and automatic transmissions, and trim levels that ranged from utilitarian to near-luxury. While ride and handling might seem crude compared with more modern designs, first-generation Cherokees remain popular with Jeep enthusiasts — and they’re quite capable off-road when properly equipped.
