2022 Ford Mustang review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2022 Ford Mustang?

The Ford Mustang is a rear-wheel-drive, four-seat sports car that goes head-to-head with the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. It’s available in coupe and convertible body styles and five main trims: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium and Mach 1. Besides the Mach 1, the other high-performance Mustang is the Shelby GT500.

The EcoBoost is powered by a 310-horsepower, turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission; a 10-speed automatic is available. The GT comes with a 460-hp, 5.0-liter V-8, and the Mach 1 has a 480-hp, 5.0-liter V-8. The Shelby GT500 is powered by a 760-hp, supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 that works with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Mustang coupe offers 17 cubic feet of trunk space, according to Cars.com’s cargo measurements.

Should I Buy the 2022 Ford Mustang?

The Mustang hits all the right retro buttons for muscle car enthusiasts, and with a wide range of performance options, the venerable pony car is stronger than ever. It delivers style and powerful acceleration — especially with the available V-8 engines. Granted, performance models’ ride is on the firmer side, and the rear seat is best for kids or extra luggage. But when it comes to bang-for-your-buck, the Mustang remains a thrilling choice.

Living Large

After a negligent driver rear-ended my other car, I bought a 2022 Mustang GT Premium with the insurance money. I had a 1979 Mustang Cobra years ago and loved it. This is a great car, too. Fast, comfortable and beautiful. I haven't driven it in snow yet and have some trepidation about that but otherwise I'm glad I bought it. There are only three things I don't like: the car payment (who does?), the gas mileage, although I can get 30 mpg if I drive 58 mph, and there seems to be some high school kid at every stoplight who wants to race. This is definitely a car worth buying if you're an empty-nester, going through your mid-life crisis or single and don't have to haul much in your trunk.

2022 Mustang GT Premium

Had been looking to add a third fun car reminiscent of the late 60's Corvette/firebird/Mustangs that I had owned BUT with modern comforts and enhancements. I looked at Camaro ZL1 (too rough) Corvette (Nice but seat headrest hit me wrong) Jaguar F Type R ( would have bought this but again seat hit me wrong) Nissan Z (Too delayed and $20K markup on $40K car!!!) Challenger Hellcat widebody (Too Big for me) BMW M4 (HARD ride even on soft setting) What I really like about the Mustang GT Premium was the sound. After years of driving stick, I bought the 10 spd Auto which is a great Trans. Faster and with traffic and all, a better choice. Did not spend $9300 for Perf Package, Magnaride or exhaust since I was not going to track this car. The exhaust was too raspy for my taste. Do get the B&O stereo. I really love the sound of the stock exhaust. Loud enough to hear and quiet enough on long trip. If you want one be sure to Join Mustang Club of America, since after 90 days of membership you are eligible for a substantial discount from Ford ($2500) on a $50,000 car. This does not include any discount from dealer.

“Love my ‘Stang”

The 2022 Mustang Mach 1 that I own is an adventure each time that I drive it! It can be a daily driver or a fun time on the weekend just listening to the symphonic sounds of that V-8! This is my second V-8 Mustang and I have to say that each one has been a quite enjoyable experience!
