2014 Ford Mustang review: Our expert's take

What Is the 2014 Ford Mustang?

The 2014 Ford Mustang is a rear-wheel-drive, four-seat sports car that competes with the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Hyundai Genesis. It is offered in V6, V6 Premium, GT, GT Premium and Shelby GT500 trim levels, all of which are available in coupe and convertible body styles.

What's New on the 2014 Ford Mustang?

For 2014, all Ford Mustang models feature revised instrument cluster graphics. In addition, two appearance packages are offered with V6 and GT trims, which add a rear spoiler, body-colored louvers for the rear-quarter windows, black-painted side mirrors and black aluminum-alloy wheels. The alloy wheels are 18 inches on V6 models and 19 on GT models.

What Features in the 2014 Ford Mustang Are Most Important?

The Mustang comes standard with a 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine and is available with a 420-hp, 5.0-liter V-8. Both engines are mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The performance-oriented Mustang Shelby GT500 features a 662-hp, supercharged 5.8-liter V-8. All Mustangs are rear-wheel drive.

Significant standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with LED accents, air conditioning, a CD audio system with MP3 input and a 4.2-inch display that provides trip computer and performance information. Notable optional features include 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, functional heat extractors on the hood (GT models), a navigation system, two premium Shaker audio systems and cloth or leather Recaro sport seats.

The 2014 Shelby GT500 includes a number of unique features, including the 662-hp, supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 that produces 631 pounds-feet of torque, enabling it to achieve a top speed of 200 mph. The Shelby GT500 also includes new gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission, a new carbon-fiber driveshaft, a new clutch, 19-inch front wheels, 20-inch rear wheels, Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers and larger rotors and pads throughout, quad exhaust tips and a downforce-generating grille. The GT500 is also offered with a Performance Package, which adds an electronically controlled Torsen limited-slip differential and an adaptive suspension.

The 2014, the Mustang's standard safety features include an electronic stability system, antilock brakes, frontal and front-seat side-impact airbags and Ford's MyKey system. A backup camera is optional.

Should I Buy the 2014 Ford Mustang?

The 2014 Ford Mustang offers stunning performance in relation to its price – and impressive performance even independent of what it will cost you. This is especially true of the Mustang Shelby GT500, which offers a truly exhilarating drive that makes its gaudy output numbers tangible.

The Mustang is certainly not a practical vehicle, and it's a poor choice if you prioritize versatility or family-friendliness. But if you're looking for a sports car that offers white-knuckle thrills and speed that will push you back into the seat when you press down on the gas, the Mustang is very much for you.

Leak under the seat

Under the rear seat it leaked water from the outside when driving in rainy conditions. I upgraded the stereo system and it was better for listening to music on the interstate and hi ways with the top down. I’m hoping to find another car soon.

Great Mustang Convertible

My wife and I bought our 2014 Mustang V6 Premium Convertible in 2018 with 2,800 miles on it. We have driven it as our daily driver (we are retired in the the desert southwest and have a couple of other cars) and it now we just sold it with 27,708 miles on it. It is in excellent conditon with many, many more miles life left. We maintain our cars to be in excellent condition, this Mustang is a great example of that. We have put on new tires, new battery, regular oil changes, new engine and cabin air filters and it runs fine. The exterior is still in very nice (close to new) condition as is the interior. It was Ruby Red Clear Tint Coat with the Stone Turned (off white) interior and black top. So our only less than 5 stars is for interior and comfort due primarily to the very small back seat that few, if any, adults could find the seating comfortable. So we all know that going in so it is just one of the realities of owning a sporty car. The other issue is this Mustang did not come with a Navigation system. So we spent about $1,000 installing a new entertainment system with Navigation. We have taken it on several golf trips. Two full sets of golf clubs, some duffle bags and some hanging clothes bags fit in the trunk. Then, we use the back seat for anything else and have lots of room to go on a week or two trip. The car runs very well, we have had no issues in that regard. Good power and reasonable MPG. As I said we just sold this Mustang and have purchased 2022 Mustang GT Premium Convertible with 1,800 miles on it. I guess being a return customer is the best review of the car one can give. I am transferring title today to a neighbor who bought this car. That I would sell it to someone that lives a few streets away is a testament to the quality and reliability of the 2014 Mustang

Decent little car with V6

After driving a 2022 Camaro convertible on vacation in 2022, I told my wife I would like to have a convertible for the summer. So knowing the Mustang V6 had 30 hp more than the turbo 4 in the Camaro I started searching. A decent 14 with 69k miles turned up at a local dealer so we took for a test drive. It was a NJ car but only driven in summer based on miles I assume. It is fairly responsive when you mash the peddle down hard but not as fast as my 12 Acura TL with 25 less hp. It also has an after market Flowmaster exhaust and has a nice little growl for V6. That being said it was more about the experience and just driving with the top down. Overall the interior layout is nice and great for two people. It has pretty responsive steering and handles the bumps much better than I thought. The shaker audio system sucks, pretty muddy sounding on radio and Sirius, just slightly better using the songs on my phone connected through Sync. The engine and transmission are more responsive in sport mode but leave a lot to be desired, you really have to put foot into pedal to get a response. There is also a flat spot when rpm's hit between 2000-3000 under medium to hard acceleration, really bad engineering from Ford and is a known issue. I learned from the Mustang groups you have to buy a tuner to reflash the ECM. It takes care of the soft electronic accelerator and bad shift points. (that is my project for 2024). The top goes up and down smoothly and you still have room in trunk for two sets of golf clubs(smaller bags). The top has some cracks in seams and missing threads but doesn't leak, not bad for a 9 year old roof. It also was in an accident even though carfax was clean, the bumper color is not quite the same ruby red the car is. Sadly if someone pays out of pocket to fix it doesnt get reported to Carfax. So if you find one for a decent price and want something fun to drive this car works well, knowing the issues listed above.
