2016 Audi S5 Review

from the expert editorial team

What Is the 2016 Audi S5?

The all-wheel-drive four-seat 2016 Audi S5 is a performance version of the automaker's A5 model, available as a coupe or convertible. It competes with vehicles like the BMW 435i, Mercedes-Benz C350 coupe and the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. It is available in only one trim, the 3.0T Premium Plus coupe or cabriolet. The Audi A5 is covered separately on

What's New on the 2016 Audi S5?

For this model year, the S line exterior trim is now standard, and Premium Plus models are outfitted with a Bang & Olufsen sound system. A red top is newly optional for the convertible.

How Does the 2016 Audi S5 Compare to Other Luxury Coupes?

Although it is expected that optional features can significantly bump up the price of a luxury vehicle, there are several features, like a backup camera, that should come standard but don't here. Because this is a performance vehicle, the torque-vectoring rear differential should also be standard on the S5. Although there are many areas where the S5 shines, it needs a few improvements to stay competitive in the class.

What Features in the 2016 Audi S5 Are Most Important?

The Audi S5 is powered by a 333-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine paired with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Significant standard features include Quattro all-wheel drive, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, LED running lights and taillights, a power soft-top with acoustic fabric (convertible), rollover protection (convertible), tri-zone climate control and leather seats. As required in all new vehicles, the S5 is also equipped with front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.

Significant available features include adaptive cruise control, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, the Audi Connect information system, adaptive suspension and a blind spot warning system.

Should I Buy the 2016 Audi S5?

Its impressive performance due to the supercharged V-6 and responsive dual-clutch transmission make this model a contender in its class, and the Black Optic Package sets its appearance apart from competitors. The S5 does have a few drawbacks, however, like overly assisted steering and the extra-firm base suspension.'s Editorial department is your source for automotive news and reviews. Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don't be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don't cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.
