Toyota’s major changes for 2022 include an all-new Corolla Cross small SUV and redesigns of its full-size Tundra pickup truck and GR86 sports coupe. Elsewhere, the lineup gets more incremental changes along with several new special editions, including Toyota’s blacked-out Nightshade Edition.

Here’s a look at what we know is new with Toyota for 2022.

Cars

Avalon

The Avalon lineup is trimmed for 2022. It loses all-wheel drive on its XLE and Limited models, and also loses its sportiest gasoline trim levels — the aggressive TRD and XSE Nightshade. But new for 2022 will be a Nightshade Edition for the Avalon Hybrid that replaces the former XSE Hybrid trim level and adds an appearance package of black wheels, mirror caps, a rear spoiler, badging, door handles and a shark-fin roof antenna.

Camry

Toyota’s mid-size sedan is little changed after being freshened for 2021 with styling tweaks, new multimedia screens and the latest Toyota active safety features. The 2022 Camry Hybrid will get a new SE Nightshade Edition trim level with an appearance package of black trim and wheels, similar to the SE Nightshade Edition gasoline models. Also new is an exclusive two-tone exterior paint combination of Calvary Blue body paint and a black roof for the TRD performance trim level; a new Ice Edge paint for LE, SE and XSE models; and standard dual-zone climate control for all but the TRD.

Corolla

The current-generation Corolla was new for 2020 and gets few changes for 2022 after adding a sportier Apex Edition for 2021. The 2022 gasoline Corolla adds new Ruby Flare Pearl and Windchill Pearl paint colors. Meanwhile, the fuel-efficient Corolla Hybrid (with an EPA-estimated 52 mpg combined) gets a new Premium Interior Package that adds SofTex leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and a power driver’s seat with lumbar support. The hybrid had so far been offered only in a humble, second-level LE trim. The new option doesn’t make for a hybrid as nice as the gasoline XLE trim, but it adds some desirable creature comforts.

GR86

The 86 sport coupe is fully redesigned and renamed GR86 (GR is a nod to Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsports division). The new generation of the affordable rear-wheel drive sports car — a jointly designed sibling of the Subaru BRZ coupe — has added horsepower (up 23 hp) and more torque (up 28 pounds-feet). The 2022 also has more aggressive and aerodynamic styling as well as updated 2+2 seating. And it has a new bundle of advanced safety features — though only on models with the automatic transmission, not those with the six-speed manual for now. See more details here.

GR Supra

Toyota’s hottest sports car, the GR Supra two-seater coupe, which features turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder versions, was all-new for 2020 and is mostly a carryover. But it will offer a new limited-edition model for 2022 — the GR Supra A91-CF Edition of just 600 cars. Based on the 382-hp, six-cylinder Supra, the new model adds a carbon-fiber aerodynamic body kit, 19-inch matte-black wheels, Brembo front brakes with red calipers, and an exclusive Alcantara and leather-trimmed interior. Other changes are minor, including heated seats for the base six-cylinder and an available red interior for the higher trim level. Also available is wireless Apple CarPlay capability.

Mirai

Toyota’s innovative hydrogen fuel-cell electric sedan, redesigned for 2021 and available primarily in California, adds the optional Toyota Teammate system, which includes Advanced Drive and Advanced Park (standard on the Limited trim). The former provides hands-free steering under certain conditions, allowing the car to follow other vehicles, change lanes, navigate interchanges and overtake; the latter controls steering, acceleration, braking and gear changes when parallel parking or backing into a space.

Prius

Toyota’s mild-mannered hybrid hatchback gets a little swagger for 2022 with a new Nightshade Edition. Available with front-wheel drive or AWD and with black, white or silver body paint, the special edition also gets upscale features from the Prius XLE trim level including SofTex leatherette upholstery, heated seats and steering wheel, and other amenities. Beyond the new trim, the efficient hybrid (49 to 56 mpg combined) and its Prius Prime plug-in hybrid sibling (25 miles of electric range) have only minor changes that include a newly standard rear-seat reminder to help prevent forgetting passengers, pets or other necessities in the back when leaving the car. Also new are integrated foglights and LED accent lights for the top XLE and Limited models.

SUVs

4Runner

The 2022 4Runner SUV has a new TRD Sport trim level that combines rugged TRD exterior and interior design features with a more street-friendly suspension. The Sport is value priced just above the base SR5 trim level and includes polished 20-inch wheels, a TRD-style hood scoop, a front spoiler, black roof rails and leatherette-trimmed seats. Other 4Runner changes for 2022 are minor and include standard LED high-beam headlights; new availability on most trim levels of a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert; and a new Multi-Terrain Monitor option for the top TRD Pro model that offers front, rear and side camera views on the 8-inch display. Two trim levels are dropped for 2022: the Venture model with its plus-size Yakima roof basket and the Nightshade with its black appearance package.

C-HR

Toyota says 2022 details for the subcompact SUV will be released in January. Little change is expected.

Corolla Cross

The Corolla sedan shares its name and platform with an all-new 2022 SUV, the Corolla Cross. The small SUV fits between the C-HR subcompact and the compact RAV4 in the SUV lineup, and unlike the C-HR, it offers AWD. The Corolla Cross features conservative styling, an interior that shares some details with Corolla cars and a roomy cargo area for the class. Tech features include 7-inch or 8-inch multimedia touchscreens and available wireless phone charging. It has a standard bundle of active safety features for all trims, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert that is standard on all but the base L trim and the top XLE gets a rear cross-traffic braking system. Highlander

The Highlander three-row mid-size SUV carries over with little change except for a new Bronze Edition that adds bronze-colored wheels and interior accents. The new edition is based on the mid-level Hybrid XLE trim, adds some additional standard features and is offered in Midnight Black Metallic, Wind Chill Pearl white or a trim-exclusive Cement gray. Other 2022 changes include an eight-way power passenger seat for XLE and higher trim levels that adds height adjustment.

Land Cruiser

The redesigned 2022 global version of this big, off-road-capable and expensive SUV will not be sold in the U.S.

RAV4

As Toyota’s bestselling vehicle, the RAV4 compact SUV has a new trim level and minor changes for the gasoline, hybrid and PHEV RAV4 Prime versions. The biggest change is an expansion of the hybrid line with a new SE Hybrid trim level that slots above the base LE and below the sporty XSE model. The SE Hybrid has some of the XSE’s sporty appearance but at a lower price. It has cloth seats and a 7-inch touchscreen, and it offers packages to add upgrades such as heated seats and steering wheel, a moonroof, a bigger touchscreen system and a power liftgate. Other RAV4 changes include new wheels, a locking glove box and LED interior lights. Higher trim levels also have updated headlights, and the top Limited trim has a new eight-way power passenger seat with height adjustment. The XSE and TRD Off-Road trim levels, plus the new SE Hybrid, offer a new Calvary Blue paint color.

Sequoia

The full-size, body-on-frame SUV with seats for up to eight people has no significant changes for 2022.

Venza

The Venza two-row SUV returned for 2021 as an all-new, dedicated hybrid with standard AWD after being discontinued in 2015. It continues unchanged for 2022.

Pickup Trucks

Tacoma

The Tacoma has few changes. The mid-size pickup’s TRD Pro top off-roading trim level has new 16-inch wheels, a lift increase of 1.5 inches in front and a half inch in the rear, a new bed stamp and hood graphic, and an exclusive new Electric Lime paint color. There also are upgrades for the value-oriented Trail Edition based on the SR5 Double Cab with the V-6 and four-wheel drive; it gets a higher suspension lift, new skid plate, new locking rear differential, a retro-style grille and black badging.

Tundra

Toyota’s full-size pickup truck is fully redesigned for 2022, the first redesign in 15 years. The 2022 Tundra gets two new powertrains — a twin-turbocharged V-6 and a hybrid system — and switches from leaf springs to a multi-link rear suspension with available air springs. An adaptive suspension is available for the first time, too. Tech upgrades include more standard active safety features for all trims and an available 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system. The 2022 Tundra offers towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,940 pounds. In addition to the two new powertrains, the Tundra offers two cabs, three bed lengths, RWD or 4WD, six suspensions and six trim levels. You can get more details in our review here.

Vans

Sienna

The Sienna minivan was redesigned for 2021 as a hybrid-only family hauler. It has only minor updates for 2022 and adds a new Woodland Special Edition trim level. The new edition has what Toyota calls “adventure-inspired” styling tweaks as well as standard AWD, slightly more ground clearance and some features geared toward outdoor activities such as standard roof rails with crossbars and a 1,500-watt power outlet. It is available only in a seven-seat configuration with sliding second-row captain’s chairs. Other changes include new 18-inch wheels for the XLE grade; the option of second-row captain’s chair “ottomans” for Limited and Platinum models with AWD; and a new Windchill Pearl paint color.
