What’s New for the 2025 Toyota RAV4?

The ultra-popular Toyota RAV4 doesn’t change much for the 2025 model year, but it is dropping a couple of its off-road-oriented trims. While many buyers may consider it a toss-up beyond a mild bump in price, you’ll want to move quickly if you want one of those models. Aside from that, Toyota ain’t fixin’ what ain’t broke for the seventh model year of its popular fifth-generation RAV4 SUV, and you can still get it in a range of gas-only, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

What’s New for 2025?

In perhaps an acknowledgement that most RAV4s never see rougher terrain than a gravel driveway, Toyota is getting rid of its more outdoorsy Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims on the non-hybrid RAV4 for 2025. While neither of these are equipped to breathe down a Jeep Wrangler’s throat on gnarly terrain, they did pack some useful features that made rougher roads a bit more tolerable. However, those looking to soft-road in style can take some solace in the fact that the Woodland Edition is sticking around for the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid.

There’s also a rather self-explanatory name change for the RAV4’s most highly electrified model for 2025: The RAV4 Prime is now the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. This model otherwise carries over unchanged.

Trim Levels and Pricing

Besides the culling of the Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims from the non-hybrid RAV4 lineup, all of the other RAV4 trim levels carry over for 2025. Pricing by trim level is as follows (all prices include a $1,395 destination fee); all prices are up $175 from 2024.

The 2025 RAV4 also offers both single-color and two-tone exterior paintwork. Color options vary by trim level, but the basic ones include Blueprint, Ice Cap (white), Magnetic Gray Metallic and Silver Sky Metallic. Buyers looking to pay a bit extra for premium paint options can choose from Wind Chill Pearl (a light silver) and Ruby Flare Pearl. Cavalry Blue is available as a single-tone paint job on the SE trim. The XSE can choose from several two-tone paint options, all of which pair with a Midnight Black Metallic roof: Cavalry Blue, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Silver Sky Metallic and Wind Chill Pearl. On the Woodland Edition, buyers can choose from Army Green or Ice Cap two-tone paint schemes (also with a Midnight Black Metallic roof) or an all-Midnight Black exterior.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The 2025 RAV4 packs the same powertrain options as the 2024 model, with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The gas-powered RAV4 also has an option for torque-vectoring AWD, which sends power to the wheels with more traction to manage slippery conditions or uneven terrain and can also disconnect the rear driveline to improve fuel economy. Its 203-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 184 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RAV4’s towing capacity is 1,500 pounds.

The RAV4 Hybrid also has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that works in tandem with a two-motor hybrid system to make a combined 219 hp. All RAV4 Hybrids come with AWD and a continuously variable automatic transmission. We found this powertrain to be pretty noisy when we tested a previous model year from this generation, but that was really our only complaint. In case you need to move more than it can fit inside, the RAV4 Hybrid can tow up to 1,750 pounds.

The RAV4 PHEV also features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a dual-motor hybrid system, except this one makes a combined 302 hp. It is exclusively available with AWD and a CVT. The PHEV features an 18.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack and regenerative braking that can feed extra energy back into the battery. Toyota claims that its onboard 6.6-kilowatt charger can refill the battery in roughly 12 hours using a standard 120-volt home power outlet or 2.5 hours on a Level 2 charger. It can also tow a little more: 2,500 pounds.

Official EPA-rated fuel-economy stats for the 2025 model aren’t available yet, but you can review 2024 figures here for the gas-only and hybrid versions and here for the outgoing RAV4 Prime PHEV; given the lack of changes to the RAV4 lineup, we don’t expect these ratings to change. The 2024 RAV4 Prime got 42 miles of all-electric range and 38 mpg combined for a total of 94 mpg-equivalent. The 2024 RAV4 Hybrid gets up to 41/38/39 mpg city/highway/combined, but that drops to 38/35/37 mpg for the Woodland Edition. The gas-only 2024 RAV4 can get anywhere from 25/32/28 mpg (for the now-discontinued TRD Off-Road) to 27/35/30 mpg, depending on the trim level.

Tech Features

The latest-generation Toyota Audio Multimedia system comes standard on all 2025 RAV4s and can accept over-the-air updates and respond to voice controls. An 8-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, onboard 4G Wi-Fi, satellite radio, Bluetooth device connectivity, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The luxe Limited trim as well as the hybrid and PHEV’s XSE upgrade to a 10.5-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 11-speaker JBL audio system.

Options and upgrades on higher-trim RAV4s include eight-way power adjustable memory seats, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, heated power exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, LED foglamps, a hands-free power liftgate and wireless phone charging.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The RAV4 gets high marks for safety, with both the 2024 RAV4 and RAV4 Prime earning a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; we don’t expect swapping the “Prime” badging for “Plug-in Hybrid” to change this fact. This generation of RAV4 also fared well in our Car Seat Check, earning A and B scores for every test we performed, although it’s worth noting that only two car seats will fit on the back bench.

The 2025 RAV4 comes with a suite of standard driver assists, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, lane departure steering assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams and road-sign recognition. Additionally, it features a rear-seat reminder to keep you from locking pets or kids inside. Rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot warning are standard on the XLE and above trims, as well as on both trims of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.

A 360-degree camera, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, and rain-sensing windshield wipers with a de-icing system are optional on higher trims. Available connected services include an SOS button, stolen vehicle locator, 24/7 roadside assistance and automatic collision alerts.

Should You Buy a 2024 or 2025 Toyota RAV4?

The 2024 RAV4 isn’t just Toyota’s bestselling model — it was the fourth bestselling vehicle in the U.S. for the first three quarters of this year. It comes down to personal preference, and perhaps saving a handful of bucks over the prior model year. If you adore one of the discontinued trims, consider the 2024 model year. If you’re a bit pickier and want to hold out for just the right version of a trim that’s sticking around, you may want to wait for a 2025 and work with a dealership to make sure you’re ordering in the exact spec you want.
