Malfunctioning seat belt retractors have been a popular subject of recalls so far in August, and Volkswagen is the latest automaker to be hit by the issue. Approximately 45,500 cars and SUVs, primarily from its Audi luxury sub-brand but also including the new ID.4 electric compact SUV, are being recalled in the action.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021 Audi A4, S4, A6, S6, RS 6, A8 and S8 sedans; A6 Allroad wagons; A5, S5, RS 5, A7, S7 and RS 7 hatchbacks; e-Tron, Q3, Q5, SQ5, Q7, SQ7, Q8, SQ8 and RS Q8 SUVs; model-year 2021-22 S3 sedans; and model-year 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 SUVs. The rear seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Dealers will inspect and replace the middle-rear seat belt assemblies, as necessary, for free. VW will begin notifying owners Oct. 1, but those looking to learn more can call VW at 800-893-5298, Audi at 800-253-2834 or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
