Rent the Roadway? Nissan Subscription Service Lets You Rock Different Rides

Want to “try out” that Nissan GT-R before you buy it? Me too. Now, Nissan shoppers in Texas have the chance: The automaker is testing a vehicle subscription service in the Greater Houston area. Called Nissan Switch, the program offers consumers unlimited “switches” — as often as a new vehicle each day.

Two tiers of the program will be offered. The Select tier costs $699 a month and includes the Altima sedan, Rogue and Pathfinder SUVs, and Frontier pickup truck. Jumping up to the Premium tier is $899 a month and includes the Leaf Plus electric hatchback, Maxima sedan, Murano and Armada SUVs, Titan pickup and 370Z sportscar. The GT-R can be added on to either tier, but it costs an additional $100 a day and is limited to seven consecutive days.

After a $495 membership activation fee, the monthly subscription includes the unlimited vehicle switches, delivery, cleaning, insurance, roadside assistance and regular maintenance. Nissan says the vehicles represent the latest model year and are all “well-equipped” trim levels.

Car subscription services are nothing new for those interested in a luxury vehicle, but for those with more modest bank accounts, there aren’t a lot of mainstream options.

“This program provides more choice, convenience and flexibility,” Nissan spokesman Andrew Tavi said in a statement. “For those who want a sedan during the week and an SUV or sports car, like the GT-R, on the weekends, Nissan Switch provides the solution.”

Interested customers can visit through August for more information and to enroll. Will it be expanded beyond Houston? For now, Nissan isn’t sure.
