Known for its safety and dependability, it’s not often you hear about major recalls for Japanese automaker Subaru. Unfortunately, the last few months of that silence has been broken, and Subaru is now recalling nearly 119,000 vehicles over faulty airbags.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-22 Outback wagons and Legacy sedans. The issue involves the front-passenger airbag, which may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury; the reason is that a component in the sensors of the occupant detection system may crack and short-circuit.
To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the occupant detection system sensors in the front passenger seat for free. Owners will be notified with an interim letter regarding the safety risks May 21; a second letter will be sent when the remedy is available. Those with further questions can call Subaru at 844-373-6614 (Subaru’s number for this recall is WRA-24), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
