Letting It All Hang Out: 1.2 Million Ram Trucks Recalled for Faulty Tailgates
For the second time in less than a month, Ram is recalling its 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks — but for the brand’s latest safety missive, the light-duty 1500 pickup is also included. The cause? Unintended opening of the tailgate.

The recall affects more than 1.2 million model-year 2019-22 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups. The source of the issue is misaligned tailgate strikers, which could result in the tailgate not latching properly and opening unexpectedly. That may result in a loss of unsecured cargo and road hazards that could increase the risk of a crash for those behind.
Dealers will inspect the tailgate striker alignment to the box latch and adjust, as necessary, for free. Owners will be notified Jan. 27, 2023; those with further questions in the meantime can call Ram parent automaker Stellantis at 800-853-1403 (Ram’s number for this recall is ZB8), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
