As older Hyundai vehicles have been targeted in a string of thefts driven by a viral social media trend, the automaker offered a security system and free steering wheel locks to owners impacted by the thefts as a fix. But that wasn’t sufficient for some insurance companies: According to ABC News, major providers like Progressive and State Farm have declined coverage for affected Hyundai models in certain regions due to the surge in thefts. Now, the automaker has partnered with AAA to provide insurance for these vulnerable vehicles and says it will expedite the launch of its anti-theft software.

The Highway Loss Data Institute found that lower trims of 2015-19 Hyundais and Kias are stolen at nearly twice the rate of all other brands due to a lack of a push-button start and engine immobilizer (Hyundai added a standard engine immobilizer to all models as of November 2021).

To offer yet another solution, Hyundai has announced a partnership with AAA to help owners secure insurance coverage. According to the brand, independent AAA insurers will offer new policies and renewals for eligible customers:

“We are pleased to collaborate with AAA insurers in the best interest of our shared customers and provide support for those who were having difficulty securing and sustaining auto insurance as a result of the increased criminal activity targeting Hyundai vehicles,” said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, in a statement.

AAA’s insurance coverage will be available in most states with the exception of Alaska, Massachusetts and Washington; Hyundai owners can get a quote on the company’s website.

Anti-Theft Software Update Expedited

Originally scheduled for June 2023, Hyundai says it will expedite the rollout of a free anti-theft software upgrade for eligible vehicles. Now scheduled to begin this week, the update will prevent the vehicle from starting if a break-in occurs with an “ignition kill” feature. Vehicle owners will need to schedule an appointment with a dealer to install the upgrade, which will take less than an hour, says Hyundai. All the details for the software update along with other anti-theft device options can be found on HyundaiAntiTheft.com.
