Here Are the 10 Cheapest New SUVs You Can Buy Right Now

Automakers have been rushing to fill their lineups with SUVs, and the subcompact SUV class has grown considerably as a result. Even though most subcompact SUVs don’t have much more passenger space than your typical small car — and many of them have even less cargo space — they do have the higher seating position, more rugged look and available all-wheel drive, features many shoppers want at a relatively affordable price.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that all 10 of the models in our cheap SUV list are subcompacts. They’re ordered by base price, from least to most expensive, and all prices include the SUV’s destination charge, but not any cash incentives or taxes. Prices and EPA combined fuel economy estimates are for front-wheel-drive versions of all the SUVs except the Kia Seltos, which comes with all-wheel drive on its base (LX) trim level, and the Subaru Crosstrek, which comes standard with AWD on all trims. All prices also include an automatic transmission.

Affordable subcompacts like the Nissan Kicks and Hyundai Venue may look like other subcompact SUVs and are marketed as such, but they don’t offer AWD, whose availability we required to make this list. (You can find the Venue on our companion list, the 10 Cheapest Cars You Can Buy Right Now.) Adding AWD to most of the SUVs below costs around $1,500-$2,000.

Hyundai updated the Kona for 2022 with new styling, more room and improved technology, and it also takes the top spot on this list — even with a price increase over the 2021 model. The 2022 SE’s standard continuously variable automatic transmission replaces a six-speed automatic; the new CVT pairs with Hyundai’s 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter four cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, good for a combined EPA rating of 32 mpg, up from 30 mpg for 2021. The 2022 Kona also gets an 8- or 10.25-inch dashboard touchscreen. Automatic emergency braking, hands-on lane centering, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board, and the 8-inch display includes wireless connectivity. Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist, which pairs more advanced lane centering with adaptive cruise control, is optional.

2022 Chevrolet Trax LS

Price: $22,595, including $1,195 destination
Combined fuel economy: 27 mpg

2022 Chevrolet Trax 2022 Chevrolet Trax | Manufacturer image

The Trax is one of two subcompact SUVs sold by Chevrolet, along with the newer Trailblazer listed below. The Trax is a little smaller than the Trailblazer and doesn’t have as much maximum cargo space. Power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder instead of the Trailblazer’s turbo three-cylinder, and the Trax’s engine works with a conventional stepped automatic transmission. With the disappearance of the Trailblazer’s L trim for 2022, the older Trax is once again Chevy’s least expensive SUV. You’ll pay for that in its lack of safety features, however, with automatic emergency braking unavailable on any trim.

With a design that dates back to the 2011 model year, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was one of the early subcompact SUVs on that market, and it remains one of the most affordable. Mitsubishi has updated the SUV over the years, but its dated interior and unrefined drivability is showing its age. For 2021, Mitsubishi added important safety features like automatic high beams, lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection to all trims of the Outlander Sport.

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer RS 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer | Manufacturer image

The Chevrolet Trailblazer subcompact SUV was new for 2021. For 2022, the hard-to-find L trim level has been dropped; the base trim level is now the FWD LS, powered by a 137-hp, turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that works with a CVT. Despite a base price just $200 higher than the Trax, the larger Trailblazer comes standard with useful tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity and important active-safety features including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with steering assist.

In a class where most models shortchange passengers — especially those in the backseat — the Honda HR-V is refreshingly different. Featuring a comfortable, roomy interior, the HR-V also has impressive versatility thanks to its multiposition second-row Magic Seat. All HR-Vs are powered by a 141-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that works with a CVT. The combo delivers good estimated gas mileage of 30 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, but power is modest overall. The HR-V offers important safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, but they aren’t available for the base (LX) trim.

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross L

Combined fuel economy: 32 mpg

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross is a new subcompact SUV that slots between the quirky C-HR and larger RAV4 in Toyota’s lineup. As its name implies, the Corolla Cross shares a platform and powertrain with the popular Corolla compact car. That powertrain, a 169-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and CVT, is rated at 32 mpg with the base Corolla Cross L’s standard FWD. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are advanced safety features like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. We like the Corolla Cross’ standard features and available AWD, but power is modest for both city and highway driving.

2022 Kia Seltos LX

Price: $23,805, including $1,215 destination
Combined fuel economy: 29 mpg

2022 Kia Seltos 2022 Kia Seltos | Manufacturer image

The Kia Seltos is one of two SUVs on this list that makes AWD standard on the base trim; the next-higher S trim, curiously, has standard FWD and optional AWD. The Seltos LX is powered by a 146-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that works with a CVT. The LX’s long list of standard features includes 17-inch alloy wheels and an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. New for the 2022 model year are newly standard safety features like automatic emergency braking and a blind spot warning system; both were previously optional.

Like the Corolla Cross, the Volkswagen Taos is also new for 2022. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 158 hp. With FWD, the engine is paired to a traditional eight-speed automatic and rated at 31 mpg combined; optional AWD swaps the eight-speed for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The base trim is sparsely equipped, lacking important features like automatic emergency braking or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Jeep Renegade wears signature design elements of the American off-road brand, such as round headlights and a seven-slot grille, but it hails from Italy and shares its platform with a Fiat model. (Stellantis, an automaker with multinational roots, operates both brands.) The base Renegade Sport is powered by a 177-hp, turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder that works with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Standard convenience features include push-button start, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning with steering assist. The 2022 Renegade Sport also gains a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, which replaces the previous year’s 7-inch screen.

Last on the list is the base 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, the second vehicle on this list to offer AWD as standard on the base model. Unlike the Kia Seltos, however, AWD is standard across all trims of the Crosstrek. The base Crosstrek also comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission; pairing a CVT with the base four-cylinder engine adds $1,350 to the price. It also adds Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced safety tech, which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and hands-on lane centering, and increases the combined fuel economy rating to 30 mpg from the manual transmission’s 25 mpg. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all trims.
