In a partnership between rivals Ford and Tesla, the Blue Oval has announced that owners of electrified vehicles like the F-150 Lightning pickup, Mustang Mach-E SUV and E-Transit cargo van will soon be able to access more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, and eventually all Ford EVs will come equipped with Tesla’s charging connector, called the North American Charging Standard, eliminating the need for an adapter. The surprising collaboration between the EV competitors comes after Tesla previously announced it would open a limited number of chargers to all EVs by the end of 2024.
Tesla’s larger initiative to allow all EVs access to its charging network comes with some stipulations — and extra steps for non-Tesla owners: Only a portion of its Superchargers and Level 2 destination chargers — 7,500 in total — will be available. For now, Tesla has only rolled out access to the chargers in select states like California and New York. Additionally, non-Tesla EV owners are required to pay through Tesla’s app or website; using the Superchargers requires the app download.
What’s different about the Ford-Tesla partnership is that starting in early 2024, Ford EV owners will be able to access the Superchargers and pay directly through the FordPass app without needing to download Tesla’s app. Initially, Ford EVs will require an adapter to plug into the Superchargers, but starting in 2025, all Ford EVs will come equipped with Tesla’s NACS connector, allowing owners to charge sans an adapter.
According to Ford, the Tesla partnership will more than double the number of fast chargers available to Ford EV owners; currently, Ford’s BlueOval network includes more than 10,000 public fast chargers. In addition to increasing charger accessibility, Ford EV owners will likely benefit from improved reliability: In a J.D. Power study on EV owner charging satisfaction, Tesla had a runaway lead for both Level 2 and DC fast-charging satisfaction.
“The Tesla Supercharger network has excellent reliability and the NACS plug is smaller and lighter. Overall, this provides a superior experience for customers,” said Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer, Ford Model e.
Ford has not yet disclosed the payment options for EV owners who use the Supercharging network; currently, Tesla offers a pay-per-charge or monthly membership for non-Tesla EV owners who use its charging network.
