Ford Aims to Electrify the Track With 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT, GT Performance Edition

We named the Ford Mustang Mach-E our 2021 Best Eco-Friendly Car of the Year, but Ford aims to show that it’s more than just an efficient electric vehicle that can be quick in straight-line driving. To that end, Ford is making two new versions of the all-electric SUV: the GT and GT Performance Edition. Each boasts 480 horsepower, with the GT providing 600 pounds-feet of torque while the GT Performance Edition will have 634 pounds-feet of twist.

Two Flavors of Fun

Ford is quick to note that 480 hp is the same amount that the new track-ready Mustang Mach 1 coupe has, but that the torque figures for the Mach-E GT and GT Performance are 180 or 214 pounds-feet higher than the iconic muscle car.

GT buyers will get an SUV capable of going from 0-60 mph in an estimated 3.8 seconds with an estimated 250 miles of range. It will ride on 245-section Continental all-season tires wrapped around 20-inch aluminum wheels that show off red-painted brake calipers. Inside, sport-style seats with copper accent stitching and a nine-speaker premium Bang & Olufsen stereo round out the package.

The GT Performance Edition model includes even more performance goodies to go with its extra 34 pounds-feet of torque. Its tires are 245-section Pirelli summer performance tires and behind its 20-inch wheels are red-painted Brembo brake calipers. Its suspension is upgraded as well, with Ford’s MagneRide damping system. Ford estimates the GT Performance’s 0-60 time at 3.5 seconds, but its range decreases to 235 miles. Inside, Ford Performance seats are wrapped in gray upholstery with metallic stitching.

Both the GT and GT Performance models also get a Carbonized Gray grille insert with an illuminated pony badge, as well as GT badging on the exterior.

Enhanced Performance

To make the GT and GT Performance models more capable on a track, Ford is giving both a new driving mode called Unbridled Extend. It’s not a “male enhancement” thing — at least not a pharmaceutical one. Instead, Ford says it’s meant for tracks or other closed courses to manage the EV’s power output “for lap time consistency.” It also tunes the stability and traction controls for track driving and increases the sci-fi-sounding manufactured interior sounds.

Pricing and Release Date

The Mustang Mach-E GT will be priced from $59,900 before destination and the GT Performance will cost an extra $5,000 at $64,900. Both will also be eligible for the federal EV tax credit and possibly state or local incentives as well. Pre-orders open Wednesday and deliveries are expected to begin in early fall.
