Chevrolet Corvette Celebrates 70th Birthday With Hybrid, AWD 2024 E-Ray Reveal

Chevrolet celebrated the 70th anniversary of its Corvette sports car Tuesday by unveiling the 2024 Corvette E-Ray. The Corvette has made statements in the past with the mid-engine Stingray and the Z06’s exotic flat-plane V-8 engine, and this new model not only adds all-wheel drive to the nameplate for the first time ever, it also adds a hybrid powertrain.

Subtle Styling Updates

The 2024 E-Ray’s exterior maintains the look of the standard Stingray, but it takes on the wide stance of the Z06 — it’s 3.6 inches wider than the Stingray. The five-spoke aluminum wheels come in staggered sizes (20-inch wheels up front and 21s in the rear) and are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport all-season tires; Pilot Sport 4S summer tires are available. A model-exclusive graphics package is available and adds Electric Blue stripes. Standard is carbon flash badging, and darkened exhaust tips and badging are available. Buyers can also add carbon-fiber ground effects and upgrade to carbon-fiber wheels.
The interior also takes a subtle approach to model-specific changes, adding a Stop/Start button as well as a Charge+ button, which can be used to maximize the battery’s state of charge to allow drivers to turn more laps. An updated infotainment system and instrument cluster, plus a complementary deep green only offered on 2024 Corvettes, round out the changes.

Electrified Performance
The most crucial differences are found beneath the 2024 E-Ray’s stylish skin. The familiar 6.2-liter LT2 V-8 engine continues to make 495 horsepower, but it’s now joined by a front mounted 160-hp electric motor and a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The setup allows the E-Ray to have AWD and a combined output of 655 hp, which is only 15 hp short of matching the Z06. Chevy claims it’s enough to get the E-Ray to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and through a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds at 130 mph. With all of that comes a weight penalty: The coupe is 408 pounds heavier and the convertible 338 pounds heavier when compared to their gas-only counterparts.
A new Stealth mode allows the Vette to quietly move in electric-only mode after startup at speeds up to 45 mph before the V-8 kicks in. There are six selectable driving modes available otherwise, each of which alters the amount of electric assist: Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode and Z-Mode.
Chevrolet also gave the E-Ray Magnetic Ride Control with three suspension settings, plus carbon-ceramic brake rotors from the Z06 to help with stopping power. And as for safety, the E-Ray comes with features such as lane departure warning, lane departure steering assist, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.
Pricing and Release Date
The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray will go on sale later in 2023. The brand didn’t confirm the official destination fee but did say that without the fee, the base 1LZ trim will start at $104,295 for the coupe and $111,295 for the convertible — about $1,000-$1,500 less than a 2023 Z06.
