Because the Nightshade: 2024 Toyota Corolla Regains Trim, Priced From $23,145

The Toyota Corolla is a reminder of how reassuring familiarity can be in times of great upheaval. Amidst electrification, the active-safety boom, turbocharged everything and buyers’ continued migration toward SUVs of all sizes, Toyota’s humble compact sedan and hatchback leveraged a bulletproof reputation for reliability and dependability into a spot among the bestselling vehicles of 2023. While chaos swirls around it, the Corolla marches into the 2024 model year largely unchanged bar the return of the Nightshade trim after a year off — and that steadiness carries over to the GR Corolla performance variant, which we’ve previously covered.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

Both the 2024 Corolla sedan and hatchback are powered by a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 151 pounds-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are the only drivetrain available unless buyers opt for the hybrid. Available only in the sedan body style, the hybrid powertrain pairs a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with one or two electric motors for a total of 138 hp and 105 pounds-feet of torque; it, too, uses a CVT.

The Corolla sedan gets an EPA-estimated 32/41/35 mpg city/highway/combined in the base LE spec, with the other trim levels rated at 31/40/34 mpg. The hybrid sedan is an efficiency monster, rated as high as 53/46/50 mpg for the FWD LE and XLE, but even with AWD, the SE is rated at 47/41/44 mpg. For the hatchback, those figures are 32/41/35 mpg for the SE and 30/38/33 mpg for the rest of the line.

Trim Levels

Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 safety suite is standard on every 2024 Corolla. This bundle includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure steering assist, lane-centering steering, automatic high beams and road-sign recognition.

Equipment levels for each trim level vary somewhat between the sedan, hybrid and hatchback. The base LE sedan includes 16-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, full LED exterior lighting, power locks, automatic climate control and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. The SE sedan adds 18-inch wheels and a multilink suspension, but the 18s aren’t standard on the hatchback until the XSE, and all hybrids except the Nightshade ride on 16s. All hatchbacks and hybrids get the more sophisticated suspension of the SE sedan.

Inside, Corolla variants include the same bits. The LE comes with cloth seats and keyless entry, while the SE gets sport seats and push-button starting. The Corolla Nightshade parallels the SE’s equipment, but it rides on bronze 18-inch wheels and gets black exterior trim and badging; the hatchback also gets a black roof. It’s available in three choices of exterior paint.

The XSE and XLE add blind spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert, as well as a moonroof on the sedans, heated synthetic leather front seats, a 7-inch digital instrument panel and a wireless phone charger.
