Affordably Electrified: 2025 Kia Niro Starts at $28,365, PHEV at $35,865
The current-generation Kia Niro rolls into its third model year with no major changes to the hybrid or plug-in hybrid. (Kia will release details on the 2025 Niro EV later.) Rear seat-belt pretensioners are now standard across the lineup, and heated rear seats plus an additional range-protecting heater are standard on the plug-in’s range-topping SX Touring trim. Otherwise, the Niros remain the same affordable and efficient subcompact hybrid SUV, with prices creeping up a few hundred bucks over 2024.

Powertrain Specs and MPG
The basic Niro hybrid is powered by a 139-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder supplemented with an electric motor that’s good for 195 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are the only available drivetrain. For 2024, the LX, EX and SX trim levels returned a remarkable EPA-rated 53/54/53 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Touring trims’ larger wheels knocked their ratings down to 53/45/49 mpg. (Official EPA estimates aren’t yet available for 2025, but they shouldn’t change.)
Like the Niro hybrid, the PHEV’s six-speed dual-clutch automatic and FWD are the only drivetrain offered, but a larger electric motor bumps output to 180 hp; torque remains the same 195 pounds-feet. With an 11.1-kilowatt-hour battery back, the plug-in can manage up to 33 miles of electric range in EX trim, while the SX Touring is rated for 32 miles, per Kia. The brand also claims the Niro Plug-In Hybrid achieves 108 mpg-equivalent in the EPA combined test cycle.

Safety Features and Trim Levels
Kia’s Drive Wise safety suite is standard on the 2025 Niro and Niro PHEV. It includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure steering assist, lane-following assist, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, safe exit warning and a driver attention monitor.
The EX hybrid and above plus all PHEVs also get an upgraded forward collision avoidance system that watches out at intersections and for oncoming traffic during left turns, as well as adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensors. Kia’s Highway Driving Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with active lane centering, is optional on the PHEVs as well as the hybrid EX and higher trims. Front parking sensors are available on the SX and SX Touring hybrids and standard on the SX Touring PHEV.
Additional standard features on the base hybrid LX include 16-inch aluminum wheels, LED daytime running lights and taillights, and heated side mirrors. The entry-level SUV gets cloth upholstery, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and six speakers.
The EX adds a moonroof, satin-chrome exterior trim, a smart key with push-button start, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Its cabin is upgraded with leather seat trim, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, second-row air vents and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, satellite radio, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless phone charging.
Stepping up to the EX Touring nets buyers gloss-black lower-body cladding with chrome front-fascia trim (in place of the cheaper trims’ matte-black bits), 18-inch wheels, LED interior lighting and aluminum pedals.
The basic SX reverts to 16-inch wheels (returning the Niro’s fuel economy to its full glory) and ditches the aluminum pedals, but it adds a power liftgate, synthetic leather-trimmed upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel and eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The SX Touring adds back in the larger 18-inch wheels and aluminum pedals.
Many standard features on the Niro Plug-In Hybrid are the same as the EX trim of the regular hybrid, but the PHEV uses synthetic leather and there is more optional equipment — including heated rear seats — for the plug-in. The SX Touring PHEV gets a full perforated synthetic leather interior, 18-inch wheels, chrome front-end trim, a power liftgate and a power moonroof.
