Despite the once-popular body style’s status as an outcast in modern America, we’ve had a consistent — albeit small — selection of high-performance station wagons in recent years. The Cadillac CTS-V wagon came and went, and there’s currently the Audi RS6, but the Mercedes-AMG E63 is the only consistent offering in the class. When the next-generation BMW M5 arrives later this year, the sedan will be accompanied for the first time on our shores by its wagon-bodied Touring sibling. Commence the celebration.
So far, BMW has confirmed little about the next-generation M5 except to say it will have a hybrid powertrain that’s closely related to the one currently used in the XM super SUV. There, a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine pairs with an electric motor to make 644 horsepower — although, in the XM Label Red, output rockets to an absurd 738 hp and 738 pounds-feet of torque.
Output isn’t likely to land on the same figures as the Label Red, but both horsepower and torque in the next-gen M5 may land comfortably above 700. And if it gets the XM’s plug-in hybrid system, the 2025 M5 Touring could also have an electric range of more than 30 miles, as well.
