From the outside, the 2025 BMW 4 Series coupe and convertible look much like they have since the 2021 redesign that introduced the divisive new vertical kidney grille. Redesigned LED headlights and taillights, new wheels and two new metallic paint colors (Cape York Green and Vegas Red) are the only changes. But under the hood and inside, the 2025 model represents two significant steps forward for the 4 Series.

Mild-Hybrid Tech

Both the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the 430i and the M440i’s turbocharged inline-six benefit from a new 48-volt mild hybrid system. As in other recently refreshed BMWs — and many vehicles across competitor Mercedes-Benz’s lineup — the hybrid system in the 2025 4 Series isn’t capable of powering the vehicle alone, but it does help to smooth the operation of the engine stop-start system and provides an additional nudge when the car first begins moving.

The 430i makes 255 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque; output leaps to 386 hp and 398 pounds-feet in the M440i. An eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission offering, and rear-wheel drive is standard with both engines in both body styles; all-wheel drive is available on all configurations for $2,000.

New Operating System

The 2025 model year also marks the arrival of iDrive 8.5 (or BMW Operating System 8.5, if you prefer) in the 4 Series. BMW’s latest tech is accompanied by BMW’s Curved Display, which melds the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system together into one expansive screen. While the iDrive knob remains, the new operating system also responds to touch and voice controls, featuring what BMW says is a “menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices” — so that thing on the dash that kind of looks like a larger version of the phone in your pocket and can mirror the phone in your pocket will now function more like the phone in your pocket.
