2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally: The Hoon’s EV
Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato. Porsche 911 Dakar. And now, Ford Mustang Rally. Off-road (or at least dirt-road) versions of sports cars are officially A Thing, but there’s one critical difference between Ford’s entry in this weird and awesome space: It’s the Mustang Mach-E Rally. Whereas the tip-toe Lambo and 911 are based on gas-burners, Ford’s new Rally special starts out as an electric car.

… OK, there are two critical differences: The Mustang Mach-E Rally will start at about $65,000 — a savings of nearly $160,000 versus the Porsche and more than $200,000 versus the Lamborghini. But the basic concept is the same: Loft sports car (or sporty crossover EV) on a taller suspension, fit all-terrain tires and kick up dirt.
Something Old, Some Things New
Like the Mustang Mach-E GT, the Rally has a 91-kilowatt-hour battery pack and all-wheel drive thanks to motors at the front and rear. Ford hasn’t finalized powertrain specifications for the Rally yet, but it says it’s targeting the same 480 horsepower as the GT, plus at least 650 pounds-feet of torque. (The GT Performance Edition generates a maximum of 634 pounds-feet.) A new RallySport drive mode is said to allow for more yaw, bigger slides, linear throttle response and more aggressive damping. Ford notes RallySport will also be beneficial to more normal driving in adverse conditions like snow.
Thanks to a unique suspension with specially tuned springs and MagneRide adjustable dampers, the Mustang Mach-E Rally sits 0.8 inch higher than the Mustang Mach-E GT. White 19-inch wheels recall Ford’s history in rallying. For better grip on loose surfaces, they wear Michelin CrossClimate2 tires that are slightly narrower and have a taller sidewall than the GT’s. Up front, 15.2-inch brake rotors are squeezed by red Brembo calipers.
Always Use Protection
Protective film keeps the fender trim and rocker panels from acquiring that sandblasted look, while a spoiler that Ford says “takes inspiration from the Focus RS” keeps those clouds of dust from accumulating on the sloping rear window. Underneath, Ford fits shielding to protect the motors from flying gravel. Other exterior modifications include a black roof and a unique front end with “rally-inspired” foglights and a splitter. Interior design elements tie in with the wheels, with white accents on the dash, steering wheel and front seatbacks.
Final pricing will be announced closer to the start of sales. Ford says it will begin taking orders for the Mustang Mach-E Rally in early 2024, with deliveries to commence shortly thereafter.
