2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Brings Visual Aggression With Unique Styling

When Ford unveiled the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse at the 2022 North American International Auto Show, the automaker stated the variant would push the envelope for the Mustang in a multitude of ways, including performance and styling. However, Ford didn’t reveal much about the design elements being used for the muscle car’s interior. Now, buyers can see what it will look like when they slip behind the wheel of a Dark Horse.

The bulk of the interior is carried over from the GT, with the Dark Horse featuring a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.2-inch infotainment system housed under a single piece of glass. However, the Dark Horse stands out by offering buyers trim-exclusive details such as a flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in suede with blue contrast stitching. Blue accents are also placed throughout the interior, and the stitching also works its way onto the center console, seats, door panels, gear shifter and other areas. An optional Dark Horse Appearance Package adds Bright Indigo Blue seat bolsters with matching stitching, black suede seat inserts and Deep Indigo Blue seat belts.

“The sinister and track-hungry attitude of Mustang Dark Horse inspired us to curate colors and materials in a way that underscores the vehicle’s athleticism,” said Carrie Kennerly, Ford senior color and materials designer.

That includes the shift knob for the six-speed manual transmission, which Ford claims is the heart of the interior. Made out of titanium, the shift knob is hollowed out on the inside in an attempt to improve cooling in warmer weather (buyers who choose the optional 10-speed automatic will get anodized silver shift paddles instead). Additionally, the available drift brake is wrapped in leather and has an anodized lever that allows drivers to easily adjust the rear wheels to a full lock for drifting while in Track mode.

The strong emphasis on design also highlights the evolution that the Dark Horse’s cabin went through during the design process, with older animal-skin patterns being pitched for tech-inspired “white noise” and carbon-fiber-inspired grains. Lasers were used to help create the grain pattern on top of the dashboard to reduce the amount of gloss, and the dashboard’s carbon-fiber trim has a look that resembles the three-spoke steering wheel. Finally, the instrument panel has a badge showcasing the Dark Horse’s chassis number.

Outside, the Dark Horse has optional vinyl graphics that highlight the hood’s raised center; they come in a low-gloss Tarnished Dark color with a gloss-black finish; a low-gloss black vinyl option is also available. The Dark Horse’s Appearance Package includes a unique hood vinyl graphic that ties it into the car’s black roof. For buyers who want a little bit more on the exterior, optional hand-painted stripes feature a gloss-black finish and run down the middle of the car, with Tarnished Dark stripes on either side to add what Ford calls “visual aggression.”

The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is scheduled to go on sale in the summer alongside the rest of the 2024 Mustang lineup.
