Honda redesigned its Pilot SUV for 2023, and along with more rugged styling and an infotainment overhaul, the fourth generation of the three-row SUV has also earned an improved safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The agency has given the 2023 Pilot its highest award, naming it a Top Safety Pick Plus — a designation the 2022 model failed to earn.

To earn the Top Safety Pick Plus award, the Pilot earned good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, updated side and original moderate overlap front crash tests. A vehicle also needs to have acceptable- or good-rated headlights standard on all trims, as well as an available front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. The 2023 Pilot has good-rated headlights on all trims, and its standard front crash prevention system scored a superior rating in both the daytime and nighttime tests.

The 2022 Pilot missed out on the Top Safety Pick+ award and second-tier Top Safety Pick designation due to its acceptable rating in the passenger-side small overlap test as well as not receiving credit in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluations.

The new award puts the 2023 Honda Pilot in a good position in the class as many three-row SUV competitors, including the 2023 Toyota Highlander and 2023 Hyundai Palisade, are Top Safety Pick+ award winners; the 2023 Ford Explorer only qualifies for the lower award, however.
