The BMW X5 is entering the 2023 model year with some changes to equipment and packages, as well as a revised starting price. The biggest among them is a change that’s also affected other names in the German automaker’s lineup: the phasing out of its Gesture Control system.

The removal of Gesture Control from the X5’s Premium and Executive packages follows a trend that also affects the 3, 4 and 5 Series cars and X3 and X4 SUVs for the 2023 model year. However, both packages on the X5 now come with a standard head-up display; the head-up display is also available as a stand-alone option on 45e and M50i variants. Elsewhere, the Premium Package gets a new wireless charging pad for mobile devices, and the M Sport Package for 40i and 45e models no longer includes Vernasca leather. BMW also has updated its synthetic leather upholstery, which is available in four colors. Arctic Grey metallic is no longer available as an exterior paint option.
Powertrains for the 2023 X5 carry over from 2022. The base 40i is powered by a 335-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine; the plug-in hybrid 45e model combines the turbo 3.0-liter with an electric motor and a 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack to bump total system output to 389 hp; the X5 M50i gets a 523-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8; and the X5 M has a high-output 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 600 hp (617 hp with the Competition Package). All X5 models come with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.
