2022 Toyota 4Runner Borrows TRD Sport Trim From Tacoma

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner gains a new trim level that may sound familiar to those who have cross-shopped Toyota’s mid-size, body-on-frame vehicles: TRD Sport. Also offered on the Tacoma pickup truck, the TRD Sport has a similar mission for the 4Runner: Bolster on-road driving presence versus the off-road focus of trims like the 4Runner TRD Off-Road and beastliest TRD Pro. The TRD Sport is more like the 4Runner Limited, including some of its same road-going features, but otherwise decontented to presumably start at a lower price (full pricing for the 2022 4Runner has yet to be released as of this writing).

Starting with the 4Runner’s SR5 base trim, the TRD Sport adds the Limited’s Cross-Linked Relative Absorber System (X-REAS) suspension, aka the fancy on-road suspension, which links shock absorbers on opposing ends of the SUV to better control body dive and squat over bumpy surfaces or cornering.
Other street-oriented add-ons include 20-inch wheels with gray accents, which replace the SR5’s standard 17-inch wheels, and unique styling tweaks including a TRD-style hood scoop, front spoiler and black roof rails in addition to color-keyed accents on the grille, rocker panels and body molding. Toyota’s SofTex imitation leather replaces the SR5’s cloth upholstery, with TRD embossing in the head restraints. TRD Sport floormats and a TRD shift knob finish things out.
While pricing isn’t currently available, the other TRD-lite trim, TRD Off-Road, starts at $41,905 for the 2021 model year with destination and standard four-wheel drive. The 2022 4Runner TRD Sport will come with rear- or-four-wheel drive, and all 2022 4Runners will have LED high-beam headlights complementing the currently standard LEDs for low beams and foglamps. Toyota is aiming the 2022 4Runner TRD Sport for a fall release date.
