With mid-size family sedans boasting ever larger interiors and a lot of families just heading for SUVs instead, automakers are either dropping their largest sedans or gussying them up to be premium, semi-luxury options. Kia appears to be going the latter route with the Cadenza, a car that’s still around despite very limited current sales popularity. We got a chance to see it at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show.

If you’re a big-sedan shopper, here’s what you need to know: On most trim levels, the 2019 Cadenza had a lot going on up front. The grille had 24 vertical bars plus eight LED fog lights spread about the bumper. The car that debuted at the Chicago show is, ostensibly, a higher trim level, and it’s nice to see less going on. Kia says it’s pretty much going to have one look now because there are only two trim levels instead of three, with last year’s base trim essentially dropped.
The grille now has 18 bars, and the front bumper has some interesting brightwork instead of a foglight free-for-all. The headlights are a little thinner, and the grille sits more horizontally; it doesn’t curl up as much as it did on the 2019 model. Some of that is just change for the sake of change, but I think the overall takeaway is that Kia went for something a little less busy-looking.
In back, however, it seems like things are going in the opposite direction. The Cadenza’s taillights trade a sort of sunken look for something a little more upwardly shaped. They’re joined by a reflective element, along with the chrome trim that you saw on the 2019; it’s a little more cluttered to my eyes.
