Vehicles Affected: Approximately 1,000,000 model-year 2013-16 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks, and model-year 2014-16 Ram 3500 pickups

The Problem: Certain driving conditions — such as driving off-road or debris striking the pickup — may cause the roll rate sensor to trigger a fault in the occupant restraint controller, disabling the rollover side curtain airbag and preventing the seat belt pretensioner from deploying. If both are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury in a crash that necessitates these systems.

Ram manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said it is aware of one fatality, two injuries and two accidents that may be related.

The Fix: Dealers will update the occupant restraint controller software for free.

What Owners Should Do: FCA will begin notifying owners June 23. Owners can call the automaker at 800-853-1403, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
